Developing Quality Content - Tips to Improve Your Writing Skills

Published: 02/05/2018

At the start of the new year, you may have made some resolutions. Perhaps you've been trying to make some changes. A month into 2018, some of those resolutions may be wavering, while others are still going strong. If your resolution centered on growing your business, and you are searching for ways to achieve that goal, you may want to consider dusting off your writing skills and brushing up on how to write quality content.

Many people are surprised by the impact that writing has on their SEO rankings. After all, no one really reads what's on the site, right?

Wrong!

Your website content walks a line between SEO-friendly text and reader-friendly text, balancing the need for keyword-rich content that search engines will pick up with quality writing that will present you and your business well to the readers who do more than simply skim over the page. It's important to ensure that your content is well-written, and that you regularly update and add to the content on your website (such as with regular blog posts).

You may feel nervous about publishing your writing. Here are a few tips to help you improve your writing skills and put your best foot forward:

Write more - Practice makes perfect, and writing well is often a question of how much time you actually spend writing. Writing more often means that you develop the ability to communicate effectively in your own writing style.

Read more - Good writers are almost always great readers. In the words of Dr. Seuss, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more things that you learn, the more places you'll go." As you read, you gather ideas on how to improve your own writing, and you learn more about what good writing looks like. Read a little bit every day and see how your writing benefits as a result.

Use spellcheck - Spellcheck is a great way to catch little typos and mistakes that you might make while writing and proofreading. While sometimes this tool marks an "error" that is actually correct, most of the time it will catch the major problems in your writing.

Ask someone to review your writing - Two sets of eyes are much better than one. When you look at your own work for long enough, you may find yourself skipping over spelling errors, grammatical mistakes or awkwardly phrased sentences. Another person will catch these errors and be able to give you tips to improve your writing.

Simplify - Keeping it simple is always a good idea when writing, especially when writing for your website. Remove weak words, redundant sentences, or irrelevant ideas to have cleaner, more understandable content.

Post on your blog regularly - Your website's blog is a great tool for boosting SEO performance. Even if you don't feel confident in your writing, it's an excellent platform for you to provide your readers with information and for you to practice your writing skills. If you aren't comfortable posting on your website, consider starting a personal blog.

Remember, when it comes to writing, consistency is key. Continually practicing your writing skills will ultimately make you a better writer.
