Design More with Less

Published: 11/07/2017

In today's world, we lead fast-paced and busy lives. Information is available at the swipe of a finger. We scroll through life looking for the latest news and hottest trends. Because of this information overload, your business-related graphics need to be able create interest and do it quickly in order to snag the interest of potential clients' short attention spans.

You may be thinking that if you load up a graphic with as much information and visuals as possible, surely you will grab some attention. Well, unfortunately, this is not the case. One primary principle of design that has endured even the loudest and most obnoxious trends (this one's for you, 1980's) is that less is more.

If you take notice of the successful internet ads, websites, billboards, and business cards around you and really look at their designs, you'll see my point. Effective design allows for a little breathing room. It delivers the message simply and can be easily understood. Billboards are a good example of this. The industry standard for billboards says that you have 5-10 seconds to deliver your message. Deliver your message in six words or less and rely on motivational imagery for the rest. It shouldn't be too distracting or have unnecessary elements that detract from your main point.

Think of something you'd like to convey about your business. Try to whittle that message down to a maximum of six words. Not the easiest thing to accomplish, right? But that's the point. You take all of the information you want to convey and then pull back a little to allow for some curiosity. Take it a step further and try to think of how you can use imagery alone to do the same. Now, take the content and the imagery, put them together in a simplistic yet beautiful layout, and BAM! You've got yourself an awesome graphic.

Easier said than done? Well, luckily for you, the graphic designers at Business Promotion are here to help put the pieces together for you and design more with less!
