One of the most important things a web developer strives for when building a website (other than client satisfaction, of course) is making sure the website loads smoothly and quickly. User experience is all about speed. The faster the website loads, the happier the end user will be. There are many techniques developers use to make sure the website loads quickly, but there is only one that I want to discuss today, and that is image optimization and compression.

The use of high-quality imagery on your site is important because it:

  1. Catches the viewer's attention
  2. Helps the viewer connect and feel comfortable
  3. Visually represents the business and tells the story of your website

Using high-quality images, however, can cause the site to load very slowly because these images most likely come in very large file sizes. So, how do you use nice, high-resolution images on your website without affecting the load time? The answer is optimization and compression.

How do you optimize and compress your images so they don't slow down your website? Well, there are hundreds of online tools out there that can help you optimize images. Some programs cost money, while others do not. The program we love to use here at Business Promotion is

Kraken is an online image optimization tool that quickly crunches images to much smaller file sizes WITHOUT a loss of quality. All you have to do is go to the site, select "web interface" in the menu, drop in the files you wish to optimize, and watch it work its magic. It's awesome - it will inform you of what the original image file size was before optimization and afterwards. I have seen images drop from as large as 4.19MB down to 990KB, and if you have several images, it will show you your overall collective savings.
