SEO 101

Published: 01/09/2014

What is SEO and what does it stand for? Well, SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization. Search Engine Optimization is the process by which you gain free (also referred to as "organic") website traffic via search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing. Depending on which search engine you use, you will see a list of results for the search terms you entered. For example, take a look at the screenshot below of my search for "Puma Shoes Orem Utah" on

As you can see, internet searches work by using keyword terms so that the search engines can find what you are looking for. Allow me to explain how you are found on the internet with your current website. One of the most important, basic components of SEO is called Keyword Research. Keyword research is like the building blocks in which we target certain keywords for your website. For example, if your industry is "Dentist in San Jose, California," we do not target the keyword of "dentist;" rather, we target keywords for the services you provide within that industry, such as "cosmetic dentistry," "teeth whitening," and "dental implants." The process for targeting keyword phrases for your website would include "Cosmetic Dentistry San Jose California," instead of "Dentist San Jose California." We include your location with the targeted keywords because we are looking for customers in your specific area. In addition, Google search engine results are based on your internet IP location.

The purpose of SEO is to drive traffic to your website by giving Google the correct information it needs to show your website in its result listings. The most basic way to do this is by targeting keywords through the content you provide to Google and to your customers on your website. When you provide this information, Google will place you according to how much work you put into SEO marketing. Your goal should always be to appear on the first page of all three main search engines. When SEO marketing and keyword research are done correctly, you will get the traffic you need and your website will be on the first page of Google search results. This is just the beginning of SEO and so much more that we will be sharing with you.
